Nurturing Safe Spaces: The Power of Creative Activities for SEND Families

At Poplar Union, we believe that every child deserves the chance to explore, move, play, and express themselves — especially those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Families of SEND children often face unique challenges in finding inclusive, supportive environments where their little ones can participate without pressure, judgement, or overstimulation. That’s why we’ve made it a priority to offer regular activities such as yoga, drama, storytelling, and dance specifically designed for SEND families with children aged 0–5.

Why These Activities Matter
Movement Builds Confidence and Connection
Activities like yoga and dance are more than just fun — they help children connect with their bodies, develop coordination, and build emotional resilience. For SEND children, structuredmovement in a calm, safe space can support sensory regulation, build motor skills, and create a sense of routine. Parents and carers also benefit from this gentle, bonding time, often joining in and learning strategies to take home.
Dance Sparks Joy, Movement, and Confidence
Movement is a powerful tool for early development. In Wiggle and Wonder, our inclusive dance sessions at Poplar Union, children are free to explore rhythm, balance, and self-expression in a joyful, low-pressure environment. For children with sensory sensitivities or communication delays, dance offers a gentle, non-verbal way to connect, communicate, and build confidence. Whether they’re twirling in the centre or swaying quietly at the edge, every child is welcomed just as they are — no pressure, just possibilities.
Drama Inspires Expression and Imagination
Drama allows children to explore different roles, emotions, and scenarios in a playful and non-verbal way. It can be especially helpful for those with speech or communication delays, as it encourages alternative forms of expression through movement, facial expression, and interaction. Our sessions at Poplar Union are inclusive, welcoming children as they are — whether they want to join in fully or just observe quietly from a distance.
Storytelling Sparks Language and Connection
Storytime is a shared ritual that helps children make sense of the world. For SEND children, storytelling can be a powerful tool for developing language, recognising emotions, and improving attention span. By using props, visual aids, and sensory elements, we ensure stories are accessible and engaging for all types of learners.
Connecting Families Through Nature
We understand that parenting a child with SEND can feel isolating at times. Our nature-based sessions are designed to be shared experiences for the whole family. Whether it’s exploring a garden trail, planting seeds together, or simply sitting under a tree and sharing stories, these moments in nature create space for families to connect, reflect, and feel part of a supportive community. Being surrounded by others who understand your journey can be as grounding as the earth beneath your feet. Many families have told us how much they treasure this sense of connection and belonging.
Why Poplar Union is Committed to This Work
We see ourselves not just as an arts centre, but as a community hub that responds to the needs of the people around us. Our SEND activity programme was created with one core belief: every child deserves to be included.
It was born from listening to local families who told us they needed more inclusive, nurturing spaces — places where they could step out of the house, connect with others, and feel truly seen. These activities are our way of ensuring that every child, regardless of their needs, has a space where they belong.
We are proud to offer these sessions led by experienced, compassionate practitioners who understand the needs of neurodiverse children and create a welcoming atmosphere for all. Whether it’s a calming yoga session, a joyful storytelling adventure, or a high-energy dance class — our doors are open.
