Welcome to POP-Park Sessions – free live music in the park every Friday night from 6.30pm!
Tabla maestro, Youssuf Ali Khan, and vocalist, Mahamaya Seal, perform beautiful modern South Asian songs from Bollywood, folk and more.
About Yousuf Khan
Yousuf comes from the same famous dynasty of musicians as Ali Akhbar Khan, and began playing tabla at the age of five, later studying in Calcutta. He came to England from Bangladesh in 1980 at the invitation of Leicester music service, to help set up South Asian music teaching in the City. He has worked extensively as a music teacher/workshop leader and performer ever since, and has been working with Grand Union for over 20 years. He is the leader of Poplar Union’s South Asian Rhythm Workshop courses.
About Mahamaya Seal
Mahamaya has been learning Indian classical music from the age of 5. She completed her diploma in classical vocals with ALL INDIA RADIO music composer Anupam Choudhury at the Bangiya Sangeet Parished (West Bengal University Calcutta). She then completed her study with the late Guru Srikanth Bakhre who was a renowned musical artist in West Bengal. She was also coached by internationally renowned musical artist Pandit Raja Misra for a time. Alongside this, she has taken part in radio and television performances in India and has many years experience in teaching classical Indian music to children and adults. Since coming to London in1998, she has taken part in many stage and television programs and currently works as a music teacher in primary and secondary schools.
This gig will take place on Poplar Union’s outdoor patio. If it rains, the gig will be moved inside – you must book your free ticket to guarantee entry.
