Grand Union: An Evening of Cross-Cultural Music

PIPER HOLDS THE SNAKE / CHARMER HOLDS THE SNAKE

Raptured by the neck of the flute and his rambunctious sound: the snake dances to his wild tune. From 3 continents the pipers call together; from South Korea – Si-Youl charms with Piri flute, bright, buzzing and raspy to spit fire. From Australia, and known for ensnaring the most venomous, Louise Elliott charms from a western concert flute. From Poland, yet calling from the native american tradition, Alexander Dmochowski charms from the wooden flute. Together accompanied by the almighty Regen Pan Afican Rhythm section they set to charm the audience on a journey through each tribe and a night of fusion cast between all.

Performance starts 7.30pm.
Doors open 6pm

The GU Band is the acknowledged pioneer and leading exponent of cross-cultural music-making in the UK. The GU Band are second-generation musicians who share each other’s heritages and explore West African, Caribbean, Bengali, European, and Korean music forms. Our Poplar Union monthly residency, now in its fourth year, showcases musicians from all of these cultures.

About GU Band
A collective of musicians who met, grew and trained through GUO, The Grand Union Orchestra. The acknowledged pioneer and leading exponent of cross-cultural music-making in the UK. We’re a hybrid of non-standard instrumentalists featuring Tabla, Ghuzeng and Kpanlogo players with jazz players who share a love of traditional music forms. The GU Band members are the experienced musicians of the Grand Union Youth Orchestra, who continue to compose pieces divined from the music and ethos of GUO in its ever-evolving traditions, from which they are rooted. Political in root and explorative of culture and history of migration and art.

Our shows feature improvised music with a fusion of world music traditions.
