Flax Futures
To mark the end of the Flax Exchange’s residency at Poplar Union and the project moving onto the arts Festival in Walton-on-the-Naze this September and the Whitechapel Gallery next year, Flax Piece #1 (reprise) will be performed by lead artist on the project Shane Waltener and accompanied by musician Otto Willberg.
Originally performed with Merlin Nova at The Nose in Essex and London Craft Week in 2023, Shane will process flax into thread to the sounds of Otto Willberg playing strings and a spinning wheel, bringing to attention to the musical nature of textile making.
The performance will be followed by a workshop and discussion with members of the exchange, talking about the project, growing your own fabric, sustainable practice, the relationship between making, music and movement and the making of a publication accompanying the project to be launched next year.
