Creative Health Matters: Creativity, Connection, and Care

Creative Health Matters: Creativity, Connection, and Care

At the heart of East London, nestled in the vibrant community of Poplar, Poplar Union has become more than just a venue for arts and events—it’s a space where people come to connect, express themselves, and feel supported. Over the past few years, we’ve had the privilege of running a series of creative workshops here, rooted in the belief that creativity is not just for artists—it’s a vital part of our wellbeing.

Why We Believe in Creative Health

Creative health is the idea that engaging in creative activities—whether it’s painting, writing, singing, dancing, or making something with your hands—can have a powerful impact on mental, emotional, and even physical health. It’s not about being “good” at something. It’s about being present, open, and curious.

We’ve seen first-hand how art can create moments of calm, joy, reflection, and connection. For many of our participants, especially those dealing with anxiety, loneliness, or stress, our workshops have offered a space to slow down, try something new, and meet others without pressure or judgment.

Our Workshops: More Than Just Making

Each session at Poplar Union is designed with intention. From collage to creative writing, mindful movement to sound journeys, our workshops invite people to step out of the daily rush and into a shared creative experience. The feedback we’ve received speaks volumes—people leave feeling lighter, inspired, more connected to themselves and others.

One participant told us, “I didn’t realise how much I needed this until I walked in and started creating.” That’s the magic of creative health—it unlocks something within us that words often can’t.

Why Poplar Union?

Poplar Union has been the perfect home for this work. Its welcoming atmosphere and community-minded ethos align beautifully with our mission. It’s a place where people of all ages and backgrounds feel safe to explore and grow. Whether someone’s walked in for the first time or has been attending for months, there’s a strong sense of belonging.

We’re excited to keep building this creative community. In future workshops, we’ll be exploring different creative themes, always guided by the belief that creativity is a vital part of caring for ourselves and each other.

Wellbeing doesn’t have to mean bubble baths and yoga mats (though we love those too!). Sometimes, it’s just about picking up a paintbrush, sharing a story, or listening deeply. That’s what we’re here to offer—simple, powerful moments of creative care.
