Bringing Stories to Life: Why Theatre Matters for Families and Schools

At Poplar Union, we believe in the power of the arts to uplift, inspire and connect — and nothing brings that to life quite like live theatre. Recently, we had the joy of hosting Really Big Pants Theatre, who delivered four energetic performances over two days to 360 children from three local schools. The response was incredible: laughter, wide eyes, endless questions — a reminder of why theatre is so important for children and families.

Why Theatre?

In a world of fast-moving screens and digital noise, theatre offers something beautifully human. It creates space for imagination, empathy, and wonder. For children, it’s not just a chance to watch a story — it’s a chance to feel it, live it, and learn from it.

Live performance captures attention in ways that other media can’t. It invites young audiences to be curious, to think creatively, and to see the world through new eyes. It also helps develop focus, listening skills, and emotional awareness — all while having fun.

Real Big Impact

The recent visit from Really Big Pants Theatre was a perfect example. Their play was fun, smart, and full of energy — keeping every child engaged from start to finish. It wasn’t just about sitting quietly and watching; children were invited to laugh, listen, and participate. The performances were inclusive, accessible, and full of heart — reminding us how powerful live storytelling can be.

Whether through humour, music, or movement, the show left children buzzing with excitement — and teachers and parents reflecting on how meaningful these moments can be.

Strengthening Families and Communities

Theatre isn’t just for kids — it’s for families. Shared experiences like these bring people together. They spark conversations, encourage questions, and create lasting memories. Whether it’s a joke that gets retold on the way home or a theme that leads to a deeper chat, theatre has a unique way of connecting generations.

For our local community, performances like these also help build bridges between schools, families, and cultural spaces. They turn venues like Poplar Union into hubs of learning, laughter, and creativity.

A Role for Community Spaces

Not every family can make it to a big city stage — and they shouldn’t have to. Community arts venues play a vital role in making theatre accessible and welcoming for all. With low-cost or free performances, relaxed environments, and local partnerships, we can bring high-quality theatre right into the heart of our neighbourhoods.

Supporting companies like Real Big Pants Theatre — who are committed to engaging and inspiring young audiences — is one way we continue to make that happen.

Let’s Keep the Curtain Up

Theatre isn’t a luxury — it’s an essential part of growing up, learning, and connecting. It helps children find their voices, families find common ground, and communities find joy. At Poplar Union, we’re proud to champion theatre for all, and we’ll keep opening our doors to the stories that move us.

Thank you again to Real Big Pants Theatre for reminding us why theatre matters — and for making so many young people smile.
