GymJam are back by popular demand with another of their experimental Sandbox Sessions! This time GymJam have teamed up with Piksel (Ieva Vaiti), a musician and electronic sound artist, to deliver a 2-day intensive on devising with sound for physical theatre.

What is a Sandbox Session?

We love being alchemists – mixing different things together and seeing what explodes, or doesn’t!
Our Sandbox Sessions have two aims; to be an unlocked space for artists of different backgrounds to mix their practices and discover how we can create together, and to discover what collaborations can work. (Spoiler, we think anybody can collaborate and create something)
Think of them Like a Research and Development process without the pressure of having to create a show, or a residency without the pressure of ending with a viable outcome.

Thursday 28 April – Workshop 10am – 5pm
Friday 29 April – Workshop 9am – 4pm

What to expect

Two joyful, action-packed days of moving, playing and experimenting with form as an ensemble and reacting to our sound artist, Piksel.

Engaging with the equipment and instruments Piksel will offer us. (No experience in music or playing an instrument is needed!)

Transparency and clarity in our processes of approaching, making and creating work.

Creative provocations to generate content and material, including writing tasks, movement exercises, personal and mindful provocations and more.

A safe, brave and creative space for artistic collaboration – we believe in being human first and setting up a space that is free of expectation, except the expectation to engage with each other.

Who is this for?

This workshop is for anybody who has a passion to move and create new work. Often, the people that join us in this space are established professionals of all levels, emerging artists, and student artists with a passion to move, to create new work and explore devising techniques.
We want to stress that we are open to all humans and backgrounds coming into our spaces.

What do I need to bring?

You will need:

Comfortable, loose clothing that you can move in.
A notebook and a pen (we use creative writing exercises)
Water in a re-usable bottle
Lunch and snacks could be useful if you need to save money, or there is a great cafe on-site at Poplar Union.

What other people have said

Sandbox sessions are a safe & inspiring space filled with the joy of creation.”- Sandbox Sessions Participant

An engaging & playful space to throw ideas up & out of your head and into the room.” – Sandbox Sessions Participant

The Sandbox Session was the perfect blend of collaborative idea-sharing and experimental play. The room was run in a fair and even manner, with everyone’s voices heard and the exact right amount of prepared material inputted to balance the new work being thrown up in the space. We were exercised physically, mentally, imaginatively and enjoyably. I began the session with nothing and finished brimming with creative ideas and a quality piece of usable material. I would highly recommend working with GymJam to anyone curious about using physical and body-first practices, or anyone interested in music/body interaction, or anyone who wants to sweat and have fun, or just anyone.” – Sandbox Sessions Participant
