Welcome to Sew Thrifty, Poplar Union’s new monthly sewing class!

sew thrifty, sewing classes, poplar union, east London, Maud Barrett, textiles, arts and crafts

Looking to polish up on your sewing skills and learn new techniques? Tired of spending too much money on overpriced items you wish you could make yourself? Well, these classes are just for you! Join local textile artist, Maud Barrett, as she guides you through the process of making beautiful designs from scratch using discarded materials.

This month, cushion covers!

Brighten up your sofa or bed with a personalised envelope cushion cover! Join this friendly class and learn how to make a cushion cover from start to finish. This is a great project for beginners, as well as those who know their way around a sewing machine!

What you need to know

• These classes champion upcycling, so you are encouraged to bring along any unwanted clothing or fabrics lying around the house. Not to worry if you don’t have anything; you are welcome to use the fabric provided!

• Sewing machines will be provided. If the classes are fully booked, you will work in pairs with one sewing machine between two of you. You are welcome to bring your own machine if you’d prefer.

• You will work from a general template that Maud will guide you through step by step. If you’re a confident sewer, you’re welcome to go off piste!
