As part of our month-long Women in Focus festival in celebration of International Women’s Day, we bring you Charulata.

Charulata (The Lonely Wife) is a classic Bengali feature film adapted and directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Satyajit Ray in 1964, based on Rabindranath Tagore’s novella Nastanir (The Broken Nest). It features Soumitra Chatterjee, Madhabi Mukherjee, and Sailen Mukherjee.

This film was selected by the Redbridge based, all female Komola Collective who tell stories, create theatre and, most recently make films.

Whilst this screening is free of charge, we ask for any affordable donation to put towards Komola Collective’s crowd-funder, raising money to make and distribute a new documentary Rising Silence exploring the lives and telling the stories of Bangladesh’s Birangona (Brave Woman).
