Musicians from the Grand Union Orchestra and its newly formed Re:Generation Band combine in an exuberant celebration for Black History Month!

What to expect

The legacy of the musical roots/routes that link Africa, Brazil, Cuba and the Caribbean is still powerful in East London today. Grand Union is offering free instrumental workshops for young players aged 12-18 to learn, explore and develop techniques from these musical cultures, and improve their improvisation skills. Participants will then perform as part of this Black History Month celebration, alongside the Grand Union Orchestra veterans, here at Poplar Union.

Find out more about the workshops here.

How better to round off a month commemorating Black History than an evening based on West African drumming and chant, hi-life, calypso and soca, ska and reggae, salsa and samba – a feast of dance rhythms!

About Grand Union Orchestra

Under visionary composer/director Tony Haynes, the Grand Union Orchestra is recognised as the pioneering force in cross-cultural music-making in the UK. Their autumn programme at Poplar Union and Spotlight follows an exciting summer of events across East London, and the emergence of a unique new group, the Re:Generation Band, drawn from leading musicians from the Grand Union Youth Orchestra – who are also creating their own repertoire, and experimenting with collaborations with MCs and spoken word artists.
