Grand Union Orchestra: Bengal, Bhangra and the Blues Workshops
Calling all 12-19 year olds who love music and want the chance to perform with an all-star orchestra!
Once again, we will be hosting another round of Grand Union workshops for local young people during the February half term.
Young musicians are invited to join renowned tabla maestro, Yousuf Ali Khan, in these free music workshops, this time focusing on the music of the Asian sub-continent – including Bengali songs, bhangra and classical ragas, combined with other contemporary styles like reggae, salsa and jazz. Musicians then have the opportunity to join the Grand Union Orchestra in a performance on Friday 22 February at Poplar Union. Find out more here.
About the workshops
Young musicians who play piano, brass, percussion, drums, guitar, bass, woodwind, strings or any other instrument, will work with Grand Union orchestra towards a live performance on Friday 22 February. You don’t need to have a great deal of musical experience; those with more experience will be soloists and improvisors, the less experienced will be mentored throughout the process and will learn to play the tunes by ear or by following a simple lead sheet/chart. There will also be the opportunity for participants to be part of the percussion section if they are less confident on their instrument.
Grand Union Orchestra offers a completely different style to teaching to ones normally associated with orchestras. It is built on ideas of experimentation rather than limitation, never sticking to one genre, pioneering vision of cross-cultural music-making.
