Art Class for Over 50’s: Creativity & Friendship
April has seen the start of our first Art Class for Over 50’s. This free class gives space for participants to create a variety of artworks and learn about different artistic techniques and a sprinkling of art history. Although the group is new to Poplar Union, it has a long and rich history. Here to tell us a bit more about it, we have Victoria Coakley from the Aberfeldy Centre.
Art Class for Over 50’s: Creativity & Friendship
The group was founded in 1998 on the wishes of Community Organiser Betty Bristow. Betty wanted to organise community activities for older people so they could have a regular meeting space without having to travel far, and this idea gave birth to the art group. As a tribute to Betty’s contribution to her local community, a room at Poplar Union has been named after her.

When the group first started participants would either craft blankets and woollen hats and cardigans for the premature babies at the Special Care baby unit of the Royal London Hospital, or work with different artists to develop their artistic style and technique. Many of the ladies were recently retired so the routine of the classes was important.
This April marks a new stage in the life of the group, as the classes finally find a new home at Poplar Union. With all this change the class is also opening its arms wide to welcome new members to flex their creative muscles, and make some new friends along the way!
So why should you join? A bit of fun, improving your artistic capabilities and getting a nice lovely hot cuppa tea, oh, and don’t forget putting the world to rights! New members will develop confidence in drawing and painting techniques, but more importantly, develop long-lasting friendships.
