Dendê Nation and friends: Day of Black Consciousness

Dendê Nation welcome guests to celebrate the collective in music making. Honouring Brazil’s Day of Black Consciousness, this event can be thought of as Black History Month squashed into one evening!

What to expect

The evening will be a celebration of what Afro-Brazilians have contributed to their country and the positive effects therein. In Brasil, it’s a day that Afro Brasil commemorates Zumbi Dos Palmares, one of the pioneers of resistance to slavery in Brazil.

There will be live drumming from Dendê Nation, dance and film about what it means to some people, including a performance from dancer and teacher, Adriano Oliveira.

Audiences member will be invited to contribute to the night and talk on an important person or time in black history that they find relevant to their experience.
